Theresa remembers her first on stage performances as a solo artist started in 5th grade in school productions. She was exposed to so many types of music, from the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, that it was hard to gravitate to any one style, always appreciating whatever a genre had to offer to her love for music. The performance bug bit her then and the song writing bug bit her later in her first year of college. From performing folk music in coffee houses and opera in the local community opera productions to producing plays and even building sets for local theatre, she found herself so versatile in her creativity, that she decided to go back to school for music arranging and producing. As fate would have it, just when she was ready to sign back into college again, she meet and fell in love with Terry Johnson of The Flamingos as he was touring through her town, Hampton Virginia, with his group. It was love and music at first site and from 1976, they were inseparable until Terry passed away in 2025. There were 5 singers on the front line with a 7 piece horn band and a sound man, 13 on the road altogether, traveling the United States and Canada. Through years of traveling and all the complications of groups, continually rehearsing new singers and musicians, eventually Terry and Theresa decided it was easier to do the shows themselves with a 4 piece rhythm section. Ironically, they worked more than ever, only having 6-8 weeks off per year.
Terry and Theresa's years together were spent conquering and being the best at whatever show formate was needed in venues across the world. There were night clubs, supper clubs, Playboy Clubs, casinos, cruise ships and concerts. Each formate demanded a different repertoire and presentation. Carrying their own musicians on the road, they were always rehearsing, never site seeing, wherever they were, from North & South America to Asia and throughout Europe. Theresa was known for her spot on imitations of some of her favorite artist such as Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and her most well known and popular imitation of Janis Joplin. Many booking agents hired them to open venues, knowing that Terry and Theresa and the quality of their show would put the reputation of that venue in high standing as they opened their doors to the public, hoping to keep the clientele coming back for more. The unique thing about this was that Terry and Theresa did not use the Flamingos' name for these bookings, The power of the shows was what carried them in every performance, not a name or a hit song. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines hired them exclusively to indoctrinate a new entertainment program to increase the beverage revenue on their fleet of ships. The program was so successful with the six theme shows they produced, incorporating the cruise director and staff, that they stayed exclusive for ten years before they decided to semi-retire to rest from decades of traveling.
In the next seven years, Terry and Theresa opened and owned a full service retail jewelry store in South Florida. They continued to perform, but just as a duo in the the large condos. The store and the shows were very successful, but when Terry was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Frankie Valli convinced them to sell the store and form a Flamingos group, since the other members were deceased, and get back to what they did best. Hiring different singers, they performed in many concerts around the world, were on "The View" with Whoopie Goldberg, and started to release some of the songs they had been working on through the years including The Flamingos Diamond Anniversary Tour CD.
Theresa has performed on the same shows with some of the elite in the business including Jerry Butler, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jr. Walker & The Allstars, Shirley Alston Reeves of The Shirelles, Dennis Edwards and David Ruffin of The Temptations, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, The Stylistics, The Lettermen, The Righteous Brothers, Chubby Checker, Mavis Staples, Florence LaRue of The Fifth Dimension and so many more. While traveling for years, Terry and Theresa carried a recording studio with them in multiple anvil road cases. Terry being a track record and successful writer and producer for The Flamingos and writing and producing partners with Smokey Robinson at Motown Records, was training Theresa in those years to become a successful writer and producer herself.
She had the opportunity to meet many Grammy winning artists and producers and was able to be in the studio with some of the best of those professionals. She recorded with Harold Melvin of the Blue Notes at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia for an upcoming album and produced, recorded and played keyboards on 'I Only Have Eyes For You' for the Boyz II Men album "Under The Streetlight" at the world famous East West Studios in Hollywood, CA., where artist like Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand recorded some of their biggest hits. These are just two examples of the very fortunate exposer she had in two of the most renowned studios in the world. Those experiences are too numerous to recount here, but Theresa is currently in the process of writing a book about those exciting years of creating with Terry and others.
Theresa also booked and managed The Flamingos tours, wrote music charts and conducted for The Flamingos, taking herself off the front line to get back to the original Flamingos look of African American male singers. While conducting she was also covering a fourth harmony note on stage and occasionally coming out front to perform as she did for so many years with Terry.
After Terry's death in 2025, Theresa is now president of Hot Fun Records and TerryTree Music Publishing companies and has expanded her collaborations to fellow writers, producers and musicians throughout the world with the ease of remote collaborating. Terry and Theresa always had the goal for The Flamingos' name to be synonymous with all genres of music, not just the era where they had their first success. Since Terry brought his sound to the group in 1956 and changed them from an R&B vocal group to a Pop self contained band and vocal group, he had always continued to increase their popularity into each new decade of music. This philosophy has passed onto Theresa, and she is continuing to release new music at least every two months. (see discography below)
