New Album: Diamond Anniversary Tour 2013

The Terry Johnson’ sound, or as most in the business know him “Buzzy”, is a very recognizable ethereal mix of lush harmonies and beautifully orchestrated music.  At Motown Records, as a writing & producing partner with Smokey Robinson, his music was recorded by  The  Miracles, winning him a BMI Award for “Baby Baby Don’t Cry” and a top 10 hit “Here I Go Again”.  He also wrote and produced songs for such great artists as The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Edwin Star, Martha Reeves, The Marvelettes and David Ruffin.  Throughout his 60 years career as a writer, arranger, producer and performer, Terry has continued to be inspired and influenced by musical industry giants like Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Manhattan Transfer, Marvin Gaye, The Philly Sound, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow, Burt Bacharach, Bionce’, Michael Jackson, Clive Davis, David Foster and Tony Bennett.  Staying true to the signature sound that he produced for The Flamingos with his Grammy Hall of Fame Award winning arrangement of  “I Only Have Eyes For You”, and the critically acclaimed album “Flamingo Serenade”,  Terry has progressed The Flamingos’ legacy on this their “Diamond Anniversary Tour” CD.

Bruno Mars & The Flamingos connection (Rolling Stone Magazine)

Bruno Mars named his first album Doo-Wops & Hooligans for a reason: “It’s the purity and simplicity of it,” Mars says of the genre. “Even when they’re not saying very much, it’s a home run every time.”
“I Only Have Eyes for You – The Flamingos, 1959
Writing B.o.B.’s “Nothin’on You”, I was referencing this song. If you’re ever in the doghouse, you play this record and it gets you out fast.”

THE FLORIDA LOTTERY LOVING THE SUCCESS OF THE FLAMINGO FORTUNE COMMERCIAL!

FLORIDA LOTTERY SHATTERS ALL TIME SCRATCH-OFF SALES RECORD
TALLAHASSEE – For the first time in the twenty-five year history of the Florida Lottery, weekly sales of Scratch-Off tickets exceeded $74 million. The newest record breaks the previous sales mark by $5.7 million.
The Florida Lottery is believed to be only the third lottery-selling state to have weekly Scratch-Off sales top the $70 million mark. The other two are New York and Massachusetts.
“Breaking this weekly Scratch-Off sales record shows our players are responding to our excellent product mix, especially considering that 22 different games had sales of more than $1 million last week,” said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell. “What makes us most proud is these record sales are leading to record transfers to education.”
Last month’s sales were led by the Lottery’s newest $20 Scratch-Off game, $3,000,000 FLAMINGO FORTUNE, which launched on Tuesday, March 5. The $25 MILLIONAIRE Scratch-Off game followed closely behind with more than $8.5 million in sales.
Also contributing to this record was “Florida Lottery Day at The Villages”, showcasing the new $3,000,000 FLAMINGO FORTUNE and Terry Johnson and The Flamingos’ crowd pleasing show. More than $70,000 was generated in ticket sales due to the thousands of players who participated in this event.

Latest Review of The Flamingos’ Diamond Anniversary CD in Concert Calendar Magazine

“This is an astounding production from a legendary group, now celebrating their 60th year in the entertainment industry. The Flamingos have withstood the test of time because of their firm adherence to this principle: to produce quality music, which entertains and enlightens their fans. Terry Jonson has always pushed the envelope, offering the finest turntable favorites and orchestration to countless audiences worldwide. Johnson has now added to his resume by creating an exceptionally wonderful CD that captures the sound and essence of this one-of-a-kind group. Each of the 14 songs is given the deluxe treatment. The instrumentation is full and lush, yet it does no over power the vocals. The voices combine in a tight blend, yet each singer stands out with his own distinctive sound. The marriage of instruments and vocals is the result of a flawless mix, giving you a crisp, clean sound on each selection. The songs herein are all fine examples from the great American songbook and, when coupled with The Flamingos’ unique styling’s, become monumental in stature. “Begin The Beguine,” the Cole Porter gem, is absolutely magical. It is given new life through Terry’s fine arrangement. Two Flamingos’ standbys, “I Only Have Eyes For You” and “I’ll Be Home” are both dazzling. Listen to the spoken introduction on the latter song and then you realize why this evergreen was originally written. My favorite “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” from Freddy Mercury. It became more joyous when expertly handled by this group. Do yourself a favor and purchase “Diamond Anniversary Tour 2013.” It will stand up to everything you expect from the Flamingos. It also gives you a new appreciation for this class act. Yooo’-Terry and his wife Theresa-“Ya’ done good! This CD is available at all The Flamingos’ live appearances or on their website-www.theflamingos.com.” Frank C., Concert Calendar Magazine

As a reminder from The Flamingos, a percentage of the proceeds from the CD will be donated to the USO to help support the troops.
This CD can also be purchased on ITunes or Amazon. “The Flamingos Diamond Anniversary Tour”

A SCRATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

~Florida Lottery Teams with Doo-Wop Band The Flamingos to Debut New Scratch-Off Game~TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Lottery is introducing a new Scratch-Off ticket in style through a campaign featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Terry Johnson and the Flamingos’ world-famous “I Only Have Eyes For You.” The new $20 Scratch-Off game, $3,000,000 FLAMINGO FORTUNE, showcases the reimagined new Florida Lottery logo and debuts in a TV campaign that begins today.

$3,000,000 FLAMINGO FORTUNE offers three top prizes of $3,000,000, 10 prizes of $100,000 and over $150,000,000 in total cash prizes. The commercial, which can be viewed by clicking here: Florida Lottery Ad, depicts a woman pulled from her grocery shopping routine into a dream sequence when she sees the new Scratch-Off game in a Lottery vending machine across the store. She is serenaded by the Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes For You” as she is drawn to the Lottery vending machine. The spot ends with everything around her snapping back to reality while she continues to slow-dance with the machine as shoppers pass her in the store.

“In a case of good Lottery fortune, the Flamingos were excited to partner with the Florida Lottery on this new game,” said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell. “As we continue our mission to deliver more winning moments, it’s serendipity that all these elements came together in a wonderful campaign and new game.”

The spot, shot at a Sedano’s, a Florida Lottery retailer in Orlando, was created and produced by Jacksonville-based St. John & Partners. In addition to being featured in the TV campaign, Terry Johnson and the Flamingos will appear in a Florida Lottery sponsored live concert at The Villages, Florida, on March 9.

“I Only Have Eyes For You” was first heard in 1934 in the Movie, “Dames.” However, it was not until 1958 when Terry Johnson and the Flamingos recorded it, that it became one of the biggest hits of the rock and roll era. The current members of the group who appear in the commercial are all full time Florida residents.

“Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the Flamingos version as #157 of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

Terry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001; inducted into the Group Harmony Association Hall of Fame in 1992; inducted to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000; and 2003 Grammy Award Winner/Grammy Award Hall of Fame. Terry also received the Rhythm and Blues Pioneer award in 1996.

“We are thrilled with this partnership,” said O’Connell. “The new game, campaign and extending it into a live performance for our players is the type of well-rounded promotion we hope to provide our customers.”

The Florida Lottery offers more than 60 scratch-off games at any given time through vending machines and counter displays at more than 13,000 retailers statewide. Scratch-off games are an important part of the Lottery’s portfolio of games, making up approximately 58 percent of ticket sales and generating more than $495 million for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF) in fiscal year 2011-12.

ABOUT THE FLORIDA LOTTERY The Florida Lottery is an integral part of Florida’s culture and landscape. Responsible for contributing more than $24 billion to education and sending more than 600,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, the Florida Lottery is a dependable source of financial support for the state. The agency reinvests nearly 98 percent of its revenue back into Florida’s economy through prize payouts, commissions to more than 13,000 Florida retailers, and transfers to education. Since its inception, Florida Lottery games have also made more than 1,200 people millionaires. That’s more than $37.7 billion in prize payouts since 1988, when the first ticket was sold. As the agency celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013, an innovative and fresh spirit shines through with a mix of new and classic games, an updated logo design and new brand identity, as well as a renewed commitment to benefitting the state, all while inspiring Floridians to imagine the possibilities of their dreams coming true. Terry Johnson speaks at “Save America’s Cinemas” in Miami Beach, FL

The “Save America’s Cinemas” organization invited many of the owners and representatives of privately owned cinemas around the country as well as some of the top endorsers from the film industry to talk about the goals of the organization and to gather support for their worthy cause. They also presented one of the cinema owners with a gift of new movie and sound equipment!

I’m sure you probably have some of these beautiful old theatres in your community that are true historical land marks and reminders of a simpler time, and I’m sure they would like to know about this organization. Use  www.saveamericascinemas.org to find more information on how the theatres can receive help and how you can contribute.

The Flamingos, known for beautiful love songs, worked many of the great theatres like The Apollo, The Brooklyn Paramount and The Brooklyn Fox to name a few, and these types of theatres exist all over the country. They contribute in many ways to their communities and provide a broader viewing selection and live stage shows that the multi-plex theatres do not.

Please pass this information along to your friends and community leaders.
